What search finds¶
Reference for Find anything: the kinds of result, where each opens, and the rules behind them.
Open the search¶
- Choose the Search field in the top bar. The key is shown at the field's right edge until you type.
- Press ⌘K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows, Linux) from anywhere in the Console.
- Press / when you are not typing in another box.
- Move through the results with ↑ and ↓ and press Enter to open one; Enter with nothing chosen opens the first result.
- On a phone, choose the magnifying glass in the top bar. The search opens over the whole screen, with the same groups one under the other, and × (Close search) goes back without opening anything.
What each kind opens¶
The result opens where it lives.
| Kind | Found by | Opens |
|---|---|---|
| Project | its number or its name | the project's page |
| File | the name it is shown under, or the name it was uploaded as; a link by its name or its website, never the rest of its address | the project's page, with that file's row highlighted in Files |
| Thread (one topic and its replies) | the words of any message in it, its first message or a reply, while its first message is not deleted | the thread in Project notes, its first message above the replies; a thread about a file opens the project's Files with the thread beside the file and that message in view |
| Message | the words of a message or a thread reply in a direct conversation or group you take part in | the conversation in Messages at that message, or its thread with that reply in view |
| Client | its name | Clients, narrowed to that client |
| Member | their name | People, narrowed to that person |
| Delivery | the project, the release or the recipient organisation | the delivery's own page |
| Release | its project's number or name | the project's Releases tab |
Pages and actions¶
Pages and actions are found too. Try Billing, People, Preferences, Units and formats, New project or upload: they are listed under Pages and actions, after every project, file, thread, message, client, member, delivery and release that matches. Each is offered only to a role that can use it.
- Enter without choosing a row opens the best content match: a project whose number or name you typed, not a page that shares a word with it. When nothing but a page matches, Enter opens that page. Use the arrow keys to choose a page below content results.
- Add files opens Projects with a prompt to choose a project; it does not guess a destination.
- Invite a colleague (try the word "invite") opens People with the invitation form open, for a role that may invite.
- Pages inside another page, such as Branches, Drawing standards, Checklists, Clients and the Sent deliveries, are found by name too.
- Page and action results follow your permissions and stay available if the search of the organisation's content fails.
What each result shows¶
Each content result starts with a mark that says what it is.
| Result | Mark | Second line |
|---|---|---|
| Project | its picture, or its initials when it has none, and its number | its name and its client (see Give the project a picture) |
| File | its kind: Map file, Photo, PDF, Video, Archive or Link, as the project's Files list names them | the project it belongs to (a link names its website first) |
| Thread | a speech bubble | the newest message in it that matches, cut at about 80 characters and read as plain words; under it, who wrote it and where |
| Message, under Messages | two speech bubbles | the message or thread reply, read the same way; under it, who wrote it and the group or person |
| Member | their picture or initials | their role |
| Client, delivery or release | its own small symbol |
Each kind shows at most five results. When a kind has more, a last line such as More files matching “har” opens that kind's own list (Projects, Uploads, Clients or People), already searched for the same words. Threads, messages, deliveries and releases have no list of their own across the organisation; there the line says to type more.
Why this is so¶
The search only ever looks inside the organisation named in the top bar. A project, a file or a person in another organisation is never found here, even if you belong to both; switch organisation first (see Work in more than one organisation).
What you find is what you can already open. A project you have no access to, and its files and threads, are not listed. A project lent to you is searched like one you belong to while the loan lasts.
- Clients are found only by people who can open Clients, and members only by people who can open People.
- Deliveries are found only by people who can open Deliveries, which lists every delivery of the organisation and so asks for access to all of its projects. A member, or someone added to a single branch or project, finds no deliveries here and no label of one.
- A message is found only by the people who can read it: a direct conversation's two people, or a group's current members, not somebody removed from it, and not an owner, Admin or auditor who is not in it. Alonstech's staff find none.
- A deleted message is never found, and neither is a thread whose first message was deleted, not even by its replies.
The organisation's audit trail records that a search found projects, files or other kinds and how many, and records nothing about a match in a private conversation, not even a count. The search on the map (Find in the map) is a different one: it finds features in a published release. See Find a feature on the map.
