Notices and confirmations

When you do something in GISweaver, it answers with a short notice, such as a saved change, a link copied or a file that did not upload. A notice never stops you working or takes the keyboard from the box you are typing in.

Questions, such as leaving a page with changes you have not saved, are dialogs and wait for your answer.

The four kinds

Each notice has a coloured mark, a title in a stronger colour, and sometimes a line under it. The mark has its own shape as well as its own colour, so you do not have to tell the colours apart.

Kind Mark Example
Green A tick Contact details saved. It worked.
Blue An i Sent for approval, or a file that finished uploading while you were on another page.
Amber An exclamation mark Ticket … is open, with the line A screenshot could not be attached. Done, with a catch.
Red A cross It did not work. It says what went wrong and shows a Request number to quote to support.

On a desk or a tablet a notice appears under the top bar, in the band that holds the page's title. If it is taller than that band, the page makes room for it. On a phone it appears in the middle of the screen, where a thumb can reach it, and the page behind it is not dimmed.

How long a notice stays

Green and blue notices close by themselves; amber and red close when you do.

Notice Closes after
Green, one short line 3 seconds
Green with a second line, a link or a long title, and blue 5 seconds
Amber and red Never by itself

While a notice will close by itself, OK shows the seconds left: 3, 2, 1. Select OK at any time to close it at once. Only one notice that closes by itself is shown at a time: a newer one replaces it. Amber and red notices stack, newest nearest the top, and at most three are shown. Saying the same thing twice shows it once.

Hold a notice to read it

A green notice reading Saved, with an OK button, held open: no number counts down on it.A green notice reading Saved, with an OK button, held open: no number counts down on it. Dark theme.
  • Point at it, or move the keyboard into it. The count pauses and the number on OK becomes a pause mark. When you move away the count starts again from the full time.
  • On a phone or tablet, touch the notice anywhere but OK or a link. It then stays until you select OK.
  • Switch to another tab and nothing closes while you are away. The count starts again when you come back.

With the keyboard

  • Press F8 to move to the newest notice's OK button, and press Enter to close it.
  • Press Esc to close the newest notice. One press closes one notice, so a stray press cannot clear three refusals at once. Esc does nothing while a dialog is open or while you are typing in a box.

A screen reader reads each notice once, as it appears: red notices at once, the others politely. OK, close this message is the dismiss control.

Keep every notice until you close it

If three to five seconds is not long enough, turn on Keep notices until I close them in Preferences, on the My notifications tab. Every notice then stays until you select OK. The choice is yours, not the organisation's, and it follows you to every device you sign in on. See Keep notices until you close them.
