Draft The step matters while the project is in Draft.
Review The step matters while the project is in Review.
Published The step matters once the project is Published.
Any time The step is counted in the total but is never due.

Kind

Check A technical check was performed.
Approval A professional sign-off. Only a project lead can tick it; see Approve a checklist step.

Ticks on a step

Required The step is counted as due once the project is in its stage or past it, and is named when a project moves on with it open. Nothing stops the move; see Move a project on with required steps open.
Show the client The step goes in the copy of the checklist that travels with a delivery. Steps are internal until you tick it.

Limits

Item Limit
A template 60 steps
A step 120 characters
A step's guidance 280 characters
A group heading 60 characters

A step's menu offers Add guidance, Add a group heading above, Move up, Move down and Remove.

Why this is so

A project takes a copy of the template when it starts a checklist, and from then on the two are separate. Changing a template never changes a project, so evidence already ticked does not move under the people who ticked it. A tick is a declaration by a colleague that a step was done. It does not check the survey's accuracy, and it does not decide whether a release can go out.
